Cathodic Protection for the Conservation of the Junkers JU-87 “Štuka” – Zadar

Zineti: Innovation in cathodic protection for the preservation of historical heritage.

In collaboration with the International Center for Underwater Archaeology in Zadar, an international team of underwater conservators, archaeologists, and cathodic protection specialists, including Zineti, has developed an innovative strategy to preserve the iconic Junkers JU-87 “Štuka,” submerged near the island of Žirje.

This legendary World War II fighter-bomber, discovered in Croatian waters, showed advanced deterioration due to marine corrosion. To slow its degradation and ensure its long-term preservation, we have designed and implemented a cathodic protection system, an effective solution that completely halts the corrosive process in its metallic structure.

The application of this technology not only represents a milestone in the preservation of underwater heritage, but also ensures the stability of the airframe in the short term and extends the life of the wreck for future generations. Thanks to this intervention, the Junkers JU-87 “Štuka” will be able to be studied, documented, and potentially exhibited without risk of deterioration, ensuring its historical integrity for years to come.
